June- July Short Film: Storyboard

Storyboard ideas for the short film.

MWE

For the lesson today we've started to do some brainstorming for our short clip. In the previous lessons before we have looked at a few examples on YouTube to inspire us. For instance:

  • "Love Sick"
This is a short film which we looked into in one of our lessons, here we've distinguished elements which were featured in the clip which helped convey its comedic genre. Through the use of repetition, foreshadow, light heart score, exaggeration and slow motions; it had made the video very entertaining. Not to mention its original concept.

  • "The Last"
This is a clip which I have studied at home. What made this clip particularly effective like "Love Sick" is its original concept and the fact that it is relate-able. Both clips centres around the topic of love which is universal, thus appealing to a vast audience. (Not to mention, I absolutely adore Harry Shum Jr. So, clearly having a highly recognized actor helps as well.)

  • We looked into another short film in one of our lessons, though unfortunately I can't remember the name of the video making it difficult to find. However, it was basically an advert campaigning against the use of mobile phones while driving. It was highly dramatized, there was a solemn piano instrumental, black and white filter was used and the misc-en-scene promoted sophistication, maturity and seriousness and so the audiences attitudes was programmed to be obedient and to follow through the clip.

After taking in what we've learnt in both "Wasp" and the short films, we've used it as footing for our own short film. Thus, we've come up with many ideas for our own film. In "Wasp" we've learned that what made the text so striking is its implicit theme: Nature. From here it stems out to many other explicit themes such as, poverty, aggression, conflict and many more. As a result, it makes the text insightful and truly sensational. Therefore, as a group we've decided to find an implicit theme for each of our ideas and shape it from there. We've decided our implicit theme to be Isolation, this is featured in all of our storyboard ideas.

  1. "The Greenhorn" - The narrative tells the story of a young girl whom migrated to England, after living in a country with a conservative culture; she is suddenly forced into a new environment. The heroine is submerged into a whole new tradition, in which she suffers from culture shock; witnessing the life of adolescents with overwhelming liberty. The young girl is faced with many dilemmas such as: peer pressure and adjusting to the new culture in general.
  2. "Daymare" - A dark twist of "Sleeping Beauty" in which the heroine suffers from domestic abuse caused by her own father.
  3. "For Sale: Baby Shoes. Never Worn" - A film adaptation of Ernest Hemmingway's six word novel.

However, despite the flow of ideas running in our heads; we've decided to abandon them all as they were far too ambitious. In the short time we have and the gadgets that we're equipped with, we've decided that it's not practical to base our project on them. Furthermore, we don't believe that we will do the narrative any justice even if we try. As a result, we decided to we went with our final idea "The Walk".

"The Walk" is originally about two best friends and their time together, it mainly focuses on one of the pair. The video cuts from past to present. The present shows the individual roaming around, it seems unclear where she's heading at first but it all ties up in the end. The in between clips in her journey shows memories of her and her friend together. In the end, the individuals travels takes her to her friends grave whom we learn have passed away and the individual is simply re-living their time together.

Our filming will start as soon as we find actors for our film.
