Final and evaluation of the work

And here is our final piece! (Watch in HQ!)

Evaluation

Considering a short amount of time to work in, we're quite pleased with our work. We've tried to work in the style of Dogme 95 but we sound that it was quite a challenge to do as the same emotional intensity cannot be conveyed in such a short clip, we had to use non-diegetic sounds to make the film more effective. Nonetheless, we are very proud with our collection of clips. The colours and the effect of natural lighting makes them beautiful as the colours stands out and the warm glow it gives in some of our scenes are just perfect.

However, we have recognized our errors and here I discuss and them and what we would do if we were to remake this text again.

  1. Flashbacks and the role of the younger brother- If we could re-film the flash backs again, we would use a younger actor to play the role of the younger brother in the flashbacks. We found that since Billy looked no different to the "present day" and flash backs, it was difficult to distinguish the flashback at times. We believe that if we were able to work with a younger actor whom resembled to Billy and Josh a lot, our text would have been more effective- especially the flashbacks.
  2. Grave stone- The misc-en-scene in the graveyard scene was a massive flop. We were in a rush and so we had very little time to sort this out, but if we were to re-film this scene again; we would definitely go on location hunting more to find the perfect place to film. Find a newer gravestone as the ones in the clips looks too old. It looked as though Billy's character was visiting his grandpa, instead of his brother...
  3. Perhaps insert some dialogue- We would definitely like to use sounds more creatively next time, though the sounds in our text in my opinion worked well. I would like to develop our skills by using sounds more creatively next time.

... And those are our top 3 main criticisms of our work. We hope to be able to tackle these challenges on our next project!

June- July Short Film: Filming Day 2

June- July Short Film: Filming Day 2

Further progress with filming

MWE

Today we've managed to finish all of the filming, everything had been sorted out. Although earlier at school as we were importing video files from the ipad to the schools mac to edit. We've noticed that there were clips that seemed a bit rushed (e.g. graveyard scene) and so we've also had to re-film some of them. However, all is done and dusted and so the tiny mishap didn't cause us much delay. We are now on the process of editing.

On the issue of non-diegetic music, this took sometime as we looked for a fitting tune to help build the emotional atmosphere. At first we were torn between the instrumental cover of "Angel" and "You'll Be In My Heart". We decided to go against using the latter as the music is so iconic to Tarzan. However, "Angel" is far too well known as well, luckily we have stumbled upon a piano peace which perfectly suited our clip and decided to use it.

June- July Short Film: Filming Day 1

June- July Short Film: Filming Day 1

Recap of the first day of filming

MWE

Today we've spent the afternoon filming, what we've come to realize is that around the time in which the sun is still high but it's starting to set. It gives off this warm glow which lights up our frame dramatically and is done so fantastically well! We've managed to film most of the scenes for the "Present Day": playground, walking through field, swing, alleyway and graveyard. We are well in time with the schedule.

Filming adjustments for our project

Narrative changes

During the process of finding actors for our film, it was difficult to find people who can be dedicated to the project as all of our friends also had busy schedule. Thus, we've asked for our friend Josh Morton and his brother Billy Morton to help us. This cause adjustments to be made, instead of having two teenage girls; our text will now revolve around the brotherly relationship between two siblings instead.

Gadgets

Regarding the filming technology we're going to use, we have to use the camera on my Ipad Mini. The resolution is quite impressive considering that the device is not design for filmography, although the quality will not be as good as our previous project "Me Myself and I". Furthermore, unlike our AS project we won't be able to have the access to using mic and lights and so we have to rely on natural light.

Misc-en-scene and Settings

For the costumes, we've decided to use casual clothes as the characters will be representing universal relationship between brothers. The items used or misc-en-scene will also be masculine objects to enforce masculinity. Most of the scene will be filmed in Wolvercote and in our partner- Emma's house.

Filming Schedule

Monday, July 8th- Filming "present day": journey to the graveyard
Tuesday, July 9th- Filming flashbacks: Baseball, video games, field etc.

Editing

After filming, editing stage will start after the filming until the deadline on July 15th.
